Personally I think buying a brand new 4WD is a total waste of money. For starters, the moment you drive it out of the car yard it loses several thousand dollars, not to mention that many new cars are new models which haven't been tested. The first buyers are guinea pigs, and once problems have been identified the manufacturer will release a model that has those fixed; that's what you want to be buying. Personally I much prefer to get a used 4WD, even if it is only just a few thousand kilometers old. You will save a massive amount of money by doing this, which can go towards a few modifications to make your car more reliable, comfortable, functional and capable.
When you buy a 4WD you want to consider what you want the car to do. There is no reason to buy a massive four wheel drive if its only you travelling around, as you will pay for it in the fuel bill. Buy a car that suits what you want it to do. If you plan on doing it up with huge tires and other modifications then get something which will accept these. Four wheel drives with independent suspension are usually not that good for extreme 4WD. What sort of range do you expect from your car? If you are going to be doing towing or long trips then a diesel is usually better.
Do you need any modifications on your four wheel drive? If you do, you are often better off getting a 4WD with those modifications on it already as you will save a huge amount of money. Buying a used four wheel drive properly comes down to careful research and time consuming thought! Consider learning more 4WDs before you jump in, and investigate your insurance for 4WDs too; its expensive.
