At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what driveline or suspension setup you have, without a good set of tires for your four wheel drive you aren't going anywhere. Even with the biggest motor in the world, you need a set of tires to give you traction. If you think about a set of drag tires working in the mud then you can understand why the more aggressive types of tires are more popular for serious four wheel driving.
Of course, buying the right set of tires for four wheel driving is the most important option. For those who want to tour as a pose to serious rock climbing and mud runs then all terrain tires are the better choice. Of course, there are those who choose to never take their cars off the tarmac, and you are better off sticking with full on road terrain tires. At the end of the day though you will never get a perfect set of tires.
Those that are best off road are not as good on road, and vice versa. Those that are great off road tend to cost considerably more than those designed for road work. The only real solution is to have two sets; one that is switched on when you are going off road, and one that you use for driving around town. This is a pain to store, extra upfront cost and you have to change them over every time you go off road. Ultimately you just need to learn to compromise in one way or another.
