There are 3 main types of bull bars, classified by what they are made of. These are aluminum, steel and plastic. All have their own little advantages, and of course disadvantages too. What is important is that you get the right type of bar for what you need the vehicle for. Steel bars are the heaviest, but they are also the strongest. Aluminum bars weigh very little, but are not anywhere near as strong as a steel one. Plastic Bars weigh about the same, and tend to bend in when a collision occurs.
What is amazing about the plastic bull bars is that over a few days, the bar work tends to pop back into position. This explains why so many farmers use plastic bars. Usually when you have an accident with a aluminum bull bar the bar is a right off, but this is not always the case with plastic ones. Of course, it depends on what you hit!
If you want to mount a winch, then a steel bull bar is the only way that you can go. These are strong enough to take the immense pressure that a winch will put on the front of your vehicle. You can get bars which are designed for high or low mount winches, which again suit different purposes. In general, if you want the best bull bar and are not too concerned about price or weight, a steel one will do you best. These protect your vehicle the best, and if you are going to any remote locations you will be safest with one of these. In saying this, many new vehicles can't fit steel ones, as they mess with the air bags and other safety devices already fitted.
