Choosing the Right Evo Exhaust For You

Choosing a Mitsubishi Evo exhaust system can be a hard task. The decision to purchase is a big one due to the amount of hard earned cash you Will have to part with. To help make the decision easier for you let's look at some of the important things to consider when buying a new evo exhaust. There is no right answer as to which is best, but you should ask your self a few things to decide which is right for you.
1. Cat back or Turbo Back. The most common question from new Evolution owners ask is "should I buy a turbo back or cat back exhaust system". This is usually a hang up for people new to modifying cars, especially turbo cars. While a turbo back will give you more power, it will also cost more. A turbo back exhaust includes more piping, and sometimes a catalytic converter or test pipe, and down pipe. On average a turbo back will set you back $250 more than a cat back system.
2. Price. The overall price of an exhaust system varies wildly depending on materials used and manufacturers. Be prepared to pay minimum $650 for a cat back and $850 for a turbo back.
3. Materials. High performance exhaust systems are typically made of 1 of two materials or a combination of both. The most popular metals are stainless steel and titanium. An exhaust made from either material is corrosion resistant and will last a very long time. The largest differences are weight and price. Titanium exhausts are typically much lighter, but also cost more. A stainless exhaust will usually save weight over a factory system, and titanium will be even lighter.
4. Sound and style. Every exhaust has a different sound and style, and this will all come down to personal preference. Check out youtube or popular forums for many videos, sound clips, and pictures of different evo exhausts to help you make up your mind.
5. Power. This is the ultimate goal right, why we buy the exhaust in the first place. In my experience any exhaust from a well known manufacturer is going to make power. How much power will determine on many factors, and is more than we can discus here. In general you can believe the manufacturers claims of power gains.
6. Stay Legal. Depending on where you live and how you drive you evo there may be different laws you will need to know regarding a new exhaust system. Most states require that vehicles have catalytic converters installed, Although, not all states check, but if you get caught with out one the fines are outrageous. For off road only or race cars no catalytic converter is fine, this is commonly called a straight pipe, or test pipe. For a street legal car, a high flow cat is recommended. This will add to the cost of your exhaust system, but there will be no power loss like there would be from using a stock catalytic converter. Some states also have noise ordinances, so the sound level coming from your tail pipe needs to be below the legal limit to keep you compliant.
Now that you are prepared to shop for a new exhaust system remember the most important thing. Don't rush into buying an evo exhaust. There are many dealers on line and off to purchase from. Shop around and try to find the best deal.
