Helmet Mountain bikers often purchase a number of accessories for biking. But, the most important accessory purchased by almost all the mountain bikers is a mountain bike helmet. This is because it is regarded as the most important accessory and even an experienced biker can fall off when least expected. Purchase of this accessory is considered important as the purchase of mountain bike itself.

Accident during mountain biking cannot really be avoided. But, with the use of mountain bike helmet it is possible to lessen the amount of damage caused to the rider in the case of meeting with an accident. It is a well-known fact that helmets can protect the rider from head injuries.

If you are considering to purchase a mountain bike helmet and are not in a position to decide how much to spend on them, it is a good idea to spend as much as you can afford and this will ensure that you will be able to get a high quality helmet. It is after all going to be your life saving accessory, isn't it? So you can regard it as an investment in your safety and in your life.

It is better to purchase the mountain bike helmets from a specialized store since they will be able to find the perfect piece for you. It is very much essential to purchase the perfect size and it should rest about one inch above your eyebrows. Also, ensure that the helmet does not tip either backwards or forwards and it rests directly on the head.

If you have decided to purchase a particular helmet from several models, it is better to check the following things to ensure that the helmet fits you properly:

  • Stand in the front of a mirror and check whether the helmet is perfect. Twist it in right and left direction and front and back direction. While doing so, you should be able to see your eyebrows moving slightly.
  • Pull up on the back edge of your helmet. If it moves more than an inch you will have to tighten the rear strap behind your ear.
  • In the same way, pull up the front edge, if it moves more than an inch, you will have to loosen the strap behind your ear and tighten the strap in front of your ear. After this, the Y-part should meet below your ear.
  • Finally, shake your head strongly and ensure that the helmet does not move.

There are different types of mountain bike helmet like combat-style helmets, full-face helmets and standard helmet. So, the riders can select the one that perfectly suits their requirement.

According to Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, the riders who are not using helmets are 14 times more prone to fatal crash as compared to rider using helmets. So, do not hesitate to use mountain bike helmets even if you feel that they might because you discomfort due to perspiration and heat since your life is more important than anything else!
