When you go through driver's training and take your driving exam in order to get your first driver's license, you are taught the importance of adapting to your surroundings when operating your vehicle on the road. You learn how to drive near other vehicles, using mirrors and following distances in order to accommodate the fact that you are sharing the road with other cars. However, it is not only cars that you must share the road with.
Motorcycles are a common sight on today's roads. Because these vehicles are smaller than a car they can be difficult to notice, but they deserve and require the same protocol you would give any other vehicle. Because motorcycle operators are not protected by much other than their helmets and clothing, if you collide with a motorcycle you are likely to cause some serious, even fatal, injuries. Luckily there are steps you can take to accommodate for sharing the road with motorcyclists and preventing accidents.
Driving a Car Near Motorcycles
It is important to recognize that motorcycles have a right to use public roads in the way any other vehicle would. Because of this, it is necessary to use the same safety measures with them as you would with any other vehicle. Some important steps to take when driving near a motorcycle include:
· Keep your music level low and at a reasonable volume so you can hear if a motorcyclist is near. This will help you stay alert and will warn you when to be on the lookout for a motorcycle driver.
· Maintain proper following distance when driving behind a motorcycle, just as you would if you were driving behind a car.
· Do not brake suddenly when a motorcycle is behind you. While a rear collision is unfortunate when in is between a vehicle and a car, it can be very deadly when between a motorcycle and a car.
· If you know a motorcyclist is nearby use caution when changing lanes. Always use your mirrors and check your blind spots carefully, because it can easy to not notice when a motorcyclist is next to you.
By remembering to pay close attention to the road and by always looking twice you can prevent being involved in a collision with a motorcycle.
